Janet Ross founded and is president of Boat Papers, LLC, a company that specializes in handling the documentation and registration of yachts and other watercraft, including commercial and passenger carrying vessels. Her years of experience in boat papers have taken her to and through every type of transaction related to the buying and selling, recording of ownership interests, including boat mortgages and liens.
Though Janet’s childhood roots are in the New England seashore, she must have gotten some seawater in her blood. She’s always been drawn to living by the sea, making the Maryland shores of the Chesapeake Bay home for 25 years. During that time she organized and managed the summer youth sail training program at the Corsica River Yacht Club, which included one of the largest junior regattas on the upper Bay. Naples, Florida has been home since 2002. Sailing is her passion but gunkholing the Gulf coast shoreline, rivers, creeks and back bays in a kayak satisfies her yen for being on the water.
At Boat Papers, Janet fuses meticulous attention to detail with her broad expanse of knowledge of things boating and uses state-of-the-art communications and information technology to make managing boat papers easy and efficient for her clients.
Patricia (Pat) Kearns brings her lifelong experience with boats and the business of boating to Boat Papers as a consulting affiliate. She hosts our blog and makes her expertise available to Boat Papers’ clients who are preparing to purchase a boat. Pat and Janet Ross have been successfully combining their respective maritime experience for the benefit of their clients since 1999.
Pat founded Recreational Marine Experts Group when she moved to Naples, Florida in 2002 and returned to her practice as a marine surveyor, with a specialty in working with first time boat buyers. She previously served as the executive director for ABBRA (American Boat Builders & Repairers Association) and, prior to that, she was a technical director with the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC). In 2008, she joined the NMMA (National Marine Manufacturers Association) corps of inspectors in working the Boat and Yacht Certification program.
Pat has authored and taught popular courses on surveying, boating safety standards compliance and technical writing, writes and edits for boating publications and enjoys her work as a speaker and seminar leader in maritime forums. She has conceived, authored, produced and presented original industry training programs and workshops and is a sought after industry consultant. Pat is at the leading edge as a producer of and instructor for online/distance training programs for industry professionals.
As a working sailor, Pat held a USCG 100 Ton Master’s License with a sail endorsement. As a civilian OIC (Officer in Charge) at the U.S. Naval Academy Sailing Squadron, she trained midshipmen on Navy sailing vessels. For her, the boat business is a wonderful life’s work, filled with opportunity. If there’s a (fiber) glass ceiling, she hasn’t bumped her head on it yet.
